Disable default folders on Nokia E-61

Filed under: Hardware, Software — Roman @ 12:53

The folders “Sheets”, “Others”, “Preesentations”, which Symbian S60 3rd on the Nokia E-61 and other such “Smart”phones creates and irritatingly prevents their deletion can be removed by going into “Connections”, “Data cable”, selecting “Data transfer”.

Connect to PC or whatever and change attributes to SYSTEM, HIDDEN (use for instance Total Commander to do this).

Done. Enjoy less clutter and Nokia imposed folders on your Symbian! :)

iPod Shuffle 2G Tips & Tricks

There are many tricks for the iPod Shuffle on the net so I’ll just add my ‘five cents’.
ipod shuffle 2g

Usage
I use the Shuffle for books, podcasts, and music. Since it doesn’t have a display, podcasts come first, then the books, and music last. Since I don’t listen to 5 books at once I usually have 3 podcasts and 1 book there. I switch to ordered play, press the play/pause button three times and I’m at the beginning of the list. Playback position of the book and podcast is remembered so it’s very easy. When I’m tired of the spoken word I flip the switch to shuffle. Since the podcasts and books are skipped in the shuffle mode, I only get music. Shuffled. The way I like it. I find that the shuffle has a special position among MP3 players in its size, usability, and now wearability.

Tips & tricks
I read the apple manual for the new shuffle, which sets a few unclarities and rumours on the net straight. Here they are:

  • Setting Songs to Play at the Same Volume Level (p. 16)

The loudness of songs and other audio may vary depending on how the audio was recorded or encoded. iTunes can automatically adjust the volume of songs, so they play at the same relative volume level. You can set iPod shuffle to use the iTunes volume settings.

  • Checking the Battery Status (p. 7)

When you turn iPod shuffle on, or disconnect it from your computer or power adapter, the status light tells you approximately how much charge is in the battery. See the table in the following section. If iPod shuffle is already on, you can check the battery status without interrupting playback by quickly switching iPod shuffle off and then on again.

  • Start a track over
    Press Previous/Rewind button
  • Play the previous track
    Press Previous/Rewind button twice.

Nokia E61 firmware update. Not!

Filed under: Hardware, Software — Roman @ 12:03

So much for an available update as rumoured on the net…

Nokia E61 firmware update

Note that there is NO NEW FIRMWARE available at this time. Hopefully Nokia doesn’t count on selling the new firmware to us in form of another €400 device and an “including the new feature pack 1″ sticker on the box.

Nokia E61 dust problem

Filed under: Hardware, Uncategorized — Roman @ 19:02

nokia e61 dust problemMulti-billion dollar company creates their ‘blackberry killer’, Nokia E61 business phone/PDA hybrid. It builds upon decades of EPOC/Symbian OS development and probably many millions of R&D on this particular model. Yet the phone started collecting dust particles under the screen in merely a week’s time of business (carrying in the suite pocket) use. Infuriating!

E61 is a potential bear in today’s fast expanding mobile market. Calling a product of this potential ‘E61′ throws me off the chair for a start. How about calling iPod something like “Apple Xi-M145″?

Nokia is not your backyard garage, where a group of geeks are hacking for fun. It’s rather a mammoth with over 60,000 employees reaching EUR 9 813 million in net sales just in the last quarter (EUR 1 140 million net profit). There have to be a few dollars left to create a dust-resistant screen?!?

–end of rant–

Nokia’s vision, Nokia as a company.

Mac OS on Intel?!

Filed under: Hardware, Software — Roman @ 13:48

Mac Intel - It's true! The news on Mac OS being developed in parallel to run on Intel in addition to the PowerPC processor stunned me. I can’t even be ashamed for not foretelling that despite the rumors, because a completely different processor architecture supported for 5 years just ‘in case’? That just doesn’t make sense! Apple is fairly small and 5 years ago had enough work just with keeping it alive and persuading people to jump on its new OS for which there was very little support and close to no applications. Hardly a situation to run a parallel development of this untested OS for Intel ‘just in case’!

I guess I’m a bit disappointed, too, to hear the famed RISC processor to go from Apple, from Macs. Intel is just ubiquitous, no frills processor. But it works and works for less money than IBM’s G5, I guess. Consumerism may be part of the death pill that PowerPC received. Afterall look at the 3G iPod transformed into an uglier 4G with no transparent red underlit touch buttons. It went from a specialty product, from an ultra cool, if not the coolest at the time, gadget, to an ordinary consumer product that serves the purpose.

Nevertheless, events are a stroke of a genius from the strategic market point of view. Steve Jobs just never stops surprising us…

iPod 3G

Don’t need it? Get one anyway! You’ll not regret it.

I felt no need for an MP3 player and although I thought of iPod as a nice little toy, I didn’t WANT one as I didn’t find much time to listen to music anyway..An impulsive buy a few days ago after I held it in my hand for the first time surprised me and worried me - afterall, it wasn’t a small amount of money. After I uploaded a few tunes on it my remorses have gone away.

iPod is a stunning gadget, probably the most beautiful one, and I’ve had many. If you have a sense for detail you’ll appreciate it even more. Handling, navigation in the menu, the touch sensitive surface, all is an ingenious work of art.

Recommendation - don’t try to save money on the remote if you plan to use your iPod outside.

Message for WinXP users - please follow my instructions to upload songs for the first time on your iPod. If a good soul somewhere hasn’t written them on the ipodlounge, I’d be lost and very distressed. Here we go:
1) Charge up the battery.
2) Go to apple.com/ipod and download the newest updater (2.1 now) and install it.
3) Connect your iPod to your PC. Go to my computer and format the removable drive that appears there with FAT32. This will take up to 20 mins, so don’t worry.
4) Now run the iPod updater which you installed in step 2.
5) After the updater puts the necessary EPROM information on your iPod it will tell you to plug it into the power supply to flash the ROM.
6) After you plug it into power supply flashing starts and after a few minutes you are ready.
7) Install iTunes (apple.com/itunes/download) and connect your iPod. You’re set. It works like a charm. Not to mention the incredible speed with which gigabytes of songs will transfer to you iPod.

The above has save me lot of nerves, and from what I read some people actually returned their iPods because the process for WinXP wasn’t documented. Apple should do something about it, perhaps their website, hint-hint?

As for the headphones, I’m quite an audiophile and they are very good, not too big too, like many say.

Good luck and many enjoyable listening hours. ;-)

iPod has changed the way I listen to music…
